Just two years after breaking the hearts of his admirers at the Wanda Metropolitano to sign for Barcelona, Antoine Griezmann has gone back to where he made his name.
In 2019, the French World Cup winner had joined the Catalan giants for a whopping €120m only to be unable to break out of Lionel Messi’s shadow.
Whether it is that hefty fee they paid for him that was the main draw back, no one knows. However, with Barcelona now cash strap and only bringing in players on loan and after letting star man Messi leave due to his over the top wages, it was only wise to release another big salary earner also.
This time he returns to Atletico Madrid on loan with a €40m clause inserted in his contract which necessitates the Madrid club to sign him permanently at the end of the season.
It remains to be seen what Barcelona with do with injury prone Dembele and out of favour Coutinho- two of the club’s remaining top earners.
For now, Griezmann, 30, is an Atletico Madrid player again. And will be competing with Felix, the guy Rojiblancos used the €120m they got off Barcelona to buy and Luis Suarez he went to Barcelona to replace.
Humble pie anyone?
