Nigeria’s D’Tigers humbled Team USA in a friendly game played in Las Vegas last night.
The game may be dismissed as irrelevant but not when the Team USA had all their NBA stars on show and not when it serves as a preparatory game for the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Nigeria’s win over the United States is a first for an African team, even if it is not in a competitive game.
Damian Lillard scored fourteen points for the USA despite the defeat.
The Nigerians scored 20 3- pointers on their way to winning 90-87.
Nine years after losing to the U.S. by 83 points at the 2012 Olympics, Nigeria never trailed in the fourth quarter.Nigeria’s Coach, Mike Brown was proud of his team.
Coached by Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown and featuring eight players with NBA experience, Nigeria made 20 of 42 3s, including six from Gabe Vincent (Miami Heat), who led the team with 21 points (6 of 8 on 3-pointers). Caleb Agada added 17 points, including 3 of 3 from 3-point range.
Kevin Durant (Brooklyn Nets) led the U.S. with 17 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics) added 15 and Damian Lillard (Portland Trail Blazers) had 14. Nigeria outrebounded the U.S. 46-34.
For the Nigerians, it felt like they were representing the whole continent of Africa and not just Nigeria.
