Football did not come home today, not this time. Despite the promise shown, a run of 6 games before today ended in a heart-rending defeat for the Three Lions.
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw opened the scoring early on in the 2nd minute, after Trippier and Shaw teamed up brilliantly to start and finish a swift counter attack.
But with barely 25 minutes left to go, another defender, this time Italy’s veteran defender, Leonardo Bonucci drew the Azzurri level. Game on!
The game would eventually go to extra time, with Everton’s Jordan Pickford doing his best to deny Italy who were by and large the better side.
Gareth Southgate threw him so new faces as the game drew to an end, with Sancho, Rashford and Saka all coming on to take spot kicks.
However, all three of his introductions would go on to miss their kicks, as Italy squandered just two of their kicks. 3:2 it ended as Italy won their first European Cup since 1968, thereby extending England’s 55-year trophy drought.
