During Saturday’s inauguration ceremony of the new Emir of Kano, HRH Ado Bayero, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and the Chief of Staff to the President, Ibrahim Gambari, there was a mix up as both men claimed to be President Muhammadu Buhari’s representative at the event.
Nigerians have long been mocking Osinbajo as a dormant partner or a passenger in President Buhari’s cabinet, which was more glaring during the term of late Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari.
In Kano today, this was again brought to bear after Gambari read a speech, claiming to be the words of the absent President Buhari, just before the Vice President came up to deliver his address, have been introduced as the President’s representative.
Popular human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu said in Twitter, “the original boi boi himself,” as she aimed a jibe at the VP’s passenger-like status.
Her comments are a microcosm of the many times the VP has either been neglected or has been silent when he should have spoken up. There was a time President Muhammadu travelled out of the country and failed to officially hand over oversight of the country to his VP.
It is a known fact that role of the Vice President of any country is that of a mere assistant, elected alongside a President to support and act in his/her stead whenever the need arises. In Kano today, that need arose and yet again Nigerians were proved right.
