Former WBC Champion, Deontay Wilder Claims Edo Roots

Former WBC Champion, Deontay Wilder has hinted on eventually returning to Nigeria, after he traced his roots to Edo.

Wilder who was the world heavyweight champion for five years, between 2015-2020 recently released a video on YouTube where he said this.

In the video, he said when he is done with what he is doing at the moment, he will return to Edo so that he will get to know his people.

He said, “I want to go back and learn more about my culture and information with things about me. Once I’m done with what I’m doing, I’m going back to see my tribe Edo.”

“I want to see my culture and my ancestors and learn a lot of things. We all have lots of things that we are connected to that we know nothing about. I’ll love to go there and do research about my roots and my tribe,” he added.

Wilder whose five year reign as WBC Champion came to an end at the hands of Tyson Fury, is not the first Nigerian boxer to be returning home. Recently, Anthony Joshua also visited Shagamu, where his father is from. While UFC Champion, Usman Kamaru recently visited Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello after he beat Masdival recently.
