The Federal Government has appointed former Chelsea midfielder, Mikel Obi as a Youth Ambassador.
At the event which held at the NOC secretariat, National Stadium, Surulere Lagos on Friday, the Champions League winner and African Cup of Nations winner met with officials from the Youth and Sports Ministry.
Mikel, 34, is expected to lead Nigerian youths and inspire them to aspire to greater heights.
The Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Sunday Dare who led the conferment praised the former Super Eagles captain for his role in developing grassroot football. He added that the country needs models like Mikel who are zealous to help the nation move forward.
Sunday Dare said, “Time will not permit me to say much about Mikel’s success as a footballer. He is our legend and a role model who has continued to impact the lives of youth positively.”
“It is my pleasure to appoint you as a Nigeria Youth Ambassador. It’s a new portfolio and your role as youth ambassador will be made known to Nigerians,” the Minister explained.
Responding to his new role as Ambassador, the Stoke City midfielder expressed gratitude for the honour and promised to work hand-in-hand with the Ministry of Sports to ensure youths are developed.
“I feel highly honored to be appointed as Youth Ambassador of this country. It is a great feeling. I am happy with this partnership and I promise to do my best to encourage and inspire the youths towards national development not just in football but in other sports like Basketball, Boxing among others,” said Mikel.
