Passenger Boat Keels Over in Niger, Claims More than 100 Lives

About 100 persons have lost their lives after a boat headed for Kebbi State from Niger State keeled over.

The incident was said to have occurred on Wednesday morning, around 7:30am, when the boat carrying traders from Loko Mina in Niger State and headed for Kebbi State had the accident.

As at evening time on Wednesday, only four corpses had been recovered from the Niger River, even as the other 20 survivors were were also rescued. They beat had taken off with about 120 people on board.

According to a source,“The boat is old and it was also overloaded.”

Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Inga, when contacted confirmed the incident.

“It is true that a boat capsized and search and rescue operation is ongoing by the Marine police, NIWA and our local divers”, Inga remarked.
