Messi Shines as Dominant Barcelona Bash Athletic Bilbao to Clinch Copa del Rey

12 minutes, was all it took for Spanish giants Barcelona to win the 2021 Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

The opening 59 minutes of the game produced no goals, even as Ronald Koeman’s side dominated proceedings on the night. But things brightened up for the Catalans when French forward, Antoine Griezmann opened the scoring.

As it would be expected, Messi was at the heart of the move leading up to the opener. The Argentine broke forward, before laying the ball over to de Jong who squared it unto the path of the former Athletico Madrid forward to bury it. And he did.

Three minutes later, de Jong went from provider to scorer, after he met a teasing cross into the box by left back, Jordi Alba, to make it 2:0.

The Dutchman was at it again when he played a series of intricate passes with Messi on the edge of the Bilbao box, before the Argentine buried his effort with his left foot, to put the game beyond the reach of Marcelino’s men.

Messi doubled his tally just four minutes later to give Barcelona their fourth of the night. Messi received a pass from Alba, after the left back and Griezmann took out some Bilbao defenders with some delicate passes, and the multiple Ballon di’Or winner scored with Simon’s hand only helping it into his own net.

Barça are now the most successful club in Copa del Rey history with 31 victories in the competition. In the last 13 seasons, their dominance in the cup has been complete with seven titles in that time in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2016 and 2021.
