Thomas Tuchel’s revival of Chelsea continued on Saturday after the London side kept their mettle to beat Premier League favourites, Manchester City to reach the FA Cup final at Wembley.
Pep Guardiola’s City had been hoping to win a quadruple, but Chelsea busted their bubble with a fine display.
Things turned sour for City after talismanic midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne picked up a knock in the early stages of the second half, and was replaced by Phil Foden.
Chelsea would go on to score just 7 minutes later, with goal-shy forward, Timo Werner teed up Hakim Ziyech, after a quick counter attack who did well to put it past City keeper, Ederson.
City’s best chance to draw themselves level came in the 69th minute after fine work from substitute, Phil Foden. The young English forward sent a looping cross into the box unto the head of Rodri, who nodded it back across goal, only for Dias to direct his header skywards.
As City kept digging deep to find an equalizer, Chelsea tried to get the their second late on through Christian Pulisic, who danced his way through two City defenders before burying his effort, only for it to be flagged offside by the VAR.
Tuchel’s men are in the Champions League Semi Final, where they lock horns with 13 times winners of the competition, Real Madrid; and are also one point behind the Premier League top four. They now will face the winner of the Leicester vs Southampton game, set to be played tomorrow evening, in the Final at Wembley.
City, on the other hand saw better possession as it would be expected, but failed to capitalise as Chelsea pinned them back. However, they still have the League Cup, the Champions League, which is on the top of their hunting list this term, and soon-to-be Premier League Champions.
