The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has warned the Federal government of Nigeria that if anything happens to the governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, Nigeria will be plunged into war.
Governor Ortom was attacked on Saturday by fifteen gunmen who trailed him to his farm at a river bank in Tyo Mu, along Makurdi/Gboko road in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State.
Briefing news men after the attack in the government house Makurdi, Governor Ortom said as he was inspecting the farm, the militia herders, who dressed in black and had ambushed him and his security men, opened fire.
According to Ortom, the attack came a few days after the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore held a meeting in Yola and singled him out as a thorn in their flesh who must be eliminated, pointing out that he received intelligence to that effect.
While reacting to the assassination attempt on his colleague by the suspected Fulani militias, Governor Wike said such will lead the country into another civil war, adding that the federal government will be held responsible.
“If you kill Ortom, then be prepared to bury Nigeria. If anything happens to Governor Ortom, the Federal Government will be held responsible and they should be prepared that there will be no more Nigeria,” Wike insisted.
According to a statement by governor Wike’s Special Assistant on Media, Kelvin Ebiri, the Rivers State Governor also recalled how the former General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Major General Jamil Sarham, and All Progressives Congress chieftains had concluded plan to assassinate him during the 2019 general election.
He described as disturbing the growing trend where the life of incumbent governors are brazenly threatened in the country.
