The Presidency has warned Nigerians to comply with the mandatory COVID-19 guidelines or face another lock down in the country.
Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mr. Garba Shehu, stated this in a statement on Sunday.
According to him, the Executive Order that was recently signed by President Mohammadu Buhari, which makes it compulsory for all Nigerians to use facemasks and keep to social distancing in public places was done with a good intention and not to punish the citizens.
He called on opinion leaders as well as the COVID-19 task force team, to sensitize and persuade members of the public to cooperate with the government in achieving compliance in order to avoid the use of crude methods by the government.
“President Muhammadu Buhari introduced the order with the best of intentions and not with any motive to punish citizens.
“The Presidency appeals to State Governments, traditional rulers and religious leaders to play active roles in the sensitization and enforcement of the Executive Order.”
The statement added that, the government is reluctant to impose another lockdown as that may bring hardship to many citizens of the country, saying the virus is real and as such Nigerians should heed to warnings and stop refusing to comply with the laid down safety measures.
“Though vaccine availability is within reach, the propensity of the public for noncompliance weakens the fight against the virus.
“Nigerians must ignore baseless conspiracy theories that seek to deny the reality of the pandemic by complying with the order to wear masks,” the statement added.
