On Wednesday, Real Madrid got themselves eliminated from the Copa del Rey, as they took on third division side, Alcoyano.
Real Madrid Manager, Zinedine Zidane named seasoned goalscorer Benzema, marquee signing Hazard, Belgian keeper Courtois, midfield maestro Toni Kroos and Asensio on the bench, as he thought the likes of Vasquez, Mariano and Vinicius Junior could easily brush aside Alcoyano.
And for a moment, and indeed all through the game, the La Liga Champions dominated the game as they should and even got a goal in the 45th minute when Brazilian defender, Militao turned in a fine Marcelo pass home to give the Capital club the lead.
However, Madrid failed to add to their tally and eventually it came back to hurt them. The El Callao side drew themselves level in the 80th minute, after Solbes tucked away a fine pass from Ramon Olivan.
Zidane made some changes, bringing in Hazard, Asensio, Kroos and Benzema, hoping more experience would turn things around.
The game went into extra time after that late equaliser and in the 110th minute, Olivan who created the equaliser got himself sent off following a horrible lunge on Casemeiro.
Instead of Madrid capitalising on their numerical advantage and score or at least take the game to a shootout, they conceded another goal.
This time, Diakite turned a pass unto the path of Alcoyano’s number 8, Vidal who didn’t make any mistakes to make it 2:1.
