A Makurdi magistrate court on Tuesday remanded Miss. Esther Alex into a correctional facility for allegedly killing her boyfriend.
The 17-Year-Old was arraigned before a magistrate court located in North Bank, in the Benue State capital.
Switch Nigeria had reported last week that Miss. Esther confessed to setting 28-year-old Chidinma on fire after she grew tired of abortions and his maltreatment of her.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) titled: ‘Mischief by fire and culpable homicide,’ nee Esther Alex of No. 1 Zaki Biam Street, Wadata, Makurdi, went to the house of Mr Chidimma Omah, 28, at No 17 Yandev Street, Makurdi, and poured petrol on the house, while he was asleep, and set it ablaze.
“As a result, the room was engulfed in fire, which burnt down the entire property, whose value is not yet known, together with Mr Chidimma Omah, who sustained grave burns and subsequently died while receiving treatment at the hospital,” the FIR stated in part.
In making his case, the prosecution, Inspector Dominic Ochaba cited the FIR and pleaded with the court to remand the defendant into a correctional facility even as investigation into the incident continues.
The defendant’s counsel, S. O Obekpa did not object to the information contained in the FIR, but candidly pleaded with the court for an oral application to be made as regarding the FIR.
In her ruling, the Magistrate, Regina Ochokwunu overruled the defendant’s request, and ordered the accused to be remanded in prison, after which she adjourned the case till March 5th, 2021.
