Meet Bobi Wine, the Pop Star Seeking to End Museveni’s 35-year Ugandan Rule

Uganda is set to hold their presidential and parliamentary elections on Thursday, 12 January.

76-year-old Yoweri Museveni has been in power since 1985, after he helped topple Idi Amin and Milton Obote in the 1980s.

Many have come to see Museveni as authoritarian, even though in the 90’s, he was perceived by the West as a bright spark in African politics.

Today, economic and social conditions in Uganda have continued to get worse, even as he has refused to leave office. This is where Bobi Wine steps in.

-Bobi Wine’s real name is Robert Kyagulanyi.

-He is 38 years old.

-He is a pop star, who became a lawmaker in Uganda.

-Bobi Wine has been arrested multiple times, including on the day he announced his presidential bid.

-He is known for his red-beret. However, his campaign trail outfit now consists of a bulletproof vest and helmet.

-Bobi Wine, whose Twitter bio reads; one ghetto child who has something to say through music has revealed that he moved his family to the United States over fears for their safety.

Wine hopes to replace Yoweri Museveni who is bidding to win his 6th term.

-When Nigerian artistes, Omah Lay and Tems were arrested last year for allegedly violating COVID-19 rules, Bobi Wine called for their immediate release.
