Misfiring Liverpool Slip Again, as Saints Move into Sixth

Liverpool took on Southampton at Saint Mary’s on Monday night, haven had more time tha others to rest and prepare. However, the Premier League Champions failed to extend their lead at the top of the table, after they fell to a resilient Southampton side, thanks to a second minute goal by former Red, Danny Ings.

The home side began the game on the front foot, scoring in the second minute after a resultant free kick from a Thiago foul was chipped over to Ings who beautifully lofted it past the on-rushing Allison.

Southampton contained all of Liverpool’s threats.

After that it was all Liverpool, as the Merseysiders tried to get back into the game. However, on a very windy night on the South Coast, Liverpool were not able to find a breakthrough, mustering only one shot on goal, a shot that came in the 75th minute.

In contrast, Southampton had three shots and target, haven spent the best part of the game on the back foot.

Mohamed Salah couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

This defeat keeps Liverpool level on points with second place Manchester United, who have a game in hand. The two sides clash at Anfield on the 17th, in what is building up to be show Manchester United’s title credentials.

Southampton on the other hand climbed into 6th, displacing Everton to 7th on goal difference.
