Nollywood star, Segun Arinze also known as Black Arrow, has called on business tycoon and cement guru, Aliko Dangote, to prioritize investing in a local club than in investing in foreign ones.
There has been talks for years now of a planned takeover of Arsenal from Dangote. And in recent times, the business guru still reiterated that it has been his longterm desire to acquire English side, Arsenal Football Club.
He said this while speaking on the David Rubenstein Show last year, when he stated that he would consider buying Arsenal in 2021 after the completion of his projects, which are reportedly worth $20bn.
“It is a team that, yes, I would like to buy someday, but what I keep saying is we have $20bn worth of projects and that’s what I really want to concentrate on,” Dangote said.
“I’m trying to finish building the company and then, after we finish, maybe sometime in 2021 we can.”
But, veteran actor, Segun Arinze believes it would be best to invest in a local football club.
Arinze was speaking on the Punch’s sport program, Stars Talk Football, when he made these comments.
“If he (Dangote) wants to buy Arsenal, he can, but I think he should invest in a Nigerian club and make it world-class before buying Arsenal. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich had a club in Russia, his home country, before he bought Chelsea.”
Arinze, who is a Chelsea fan, went on to say he understands why Tammy Abraham, the Chelsea forward, chose to play for England rather than his native, Nigeria.
“I knew from the start that Tammy was going to play for England and not Nigeria. Most of these players of foreign decent, you think if they had the opportunity to play for European countries they will pledge their allegiance to Nigeria?”
