Manchester United’s defender and Captain, Harry Maguire has said it is about time United started winning trophies.
Maguire said this after his side scored two late goals through Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani to claim victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at Goodison Park in the League Cup Quarterfinal on Tuesday night.
Following their triumph over the Merseysiders, United will now square off against their local rivals Manchester City, who have been back-to-back champions for three years now, in the Semifinals.
Tottenham also beat Stoke City to earn a David vs Goliath contest with Championship side, Brentford.
United were beaten by City last season in this same competition and at this same stage over a two-legged tie. However, this time United will be hosting City in a one-off game at Old Trafford, as the EFL has decided that there won’t be return legs.
“We play for Manchester United, we’re expected to win trophies. We got to three semi-finals last year, this year we’ve reached our first semi-final in our first competition,” he told Sky Sports.
“It’s important to reach these big games, but we need to now start winning the big games, like the semi-finals and lift trophies for this club.”
United reached the Semifinals of the League Cup, FA Cup and the Europa League last season but won none, and have not won any major trophy since 2017 when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho.
