IGP Promotes 82,779 Junior Officers, Including 16 Killed by EndSARS Protesters

The Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, IGP Mohammed Ahmed Adamu (NPM mni) has promoted 82,779 junior police officers to their next rank, including 16 of them who lost their lives to irate protesters during the EndSARS protests that shook the nation to its foundations and caused lots of loss of lives and properties, as well as crippling both transportation and commercial activities. This was announced today 23rd November 2020 by the Nigeria Police Force. This is coming on the back of the calls for the remuneration for officers and their standard of living to be improved, by campaigners against police brutality and the concerned civil society.

Those promoted are 56,779 Sergeants who got promoted to the rank of Inspector; 17,569 Corporals who got promoted to the rank of Sergeants; and 8,431 Constables who were promoted to the rank of Corporals. The promotion includes 86 junior officers adversely impacted by the recent ENDSARS riots, 16 of which got special posthumous promotion while the 70 others who sustained various degrees of injuries during the violence perpetrated against the police during the ENDSARS protests were specially promoted.

They stated that this is part of the on-going efforts at boosting the morale of police personnel and “repositioning the Force for greater efficiency.”

While congratulating them, the IGP encouraged them to see this is an extra responsibility to discharge their duties in highly professional manner, and cease this is a challenge to contribute more to the image and accomplishments of the Force.

The IGP said that the posthumous promotion granted the deceased personnel is a gesture of appreciation for the ultimate price they paid in service of the nation.

He vowed to collaborate with all relevant agencies, organs of Government and stakeholders, to ensure a successful reform of the Police, for improved welfare and conditions of service, to deliver better policing experience to people.

The Nigerian Police Force was the most affected Government institution all through the EndSARS protests, as the personnel of the force were deliberately targeted by protesters. The protests had been corrupted by violent as well as criminal elements of the society to wreck havoc.
