Man set himself and Girlfriend Ablaze in Makurdi

A married man identified as Niko, on Saturday evening, set himself and his girlfriend ablaze in a house in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Nico, whom our source said works at Feed Africa Guest house, located at Edward Ujege street, High-level Makurdi, got angry with his nurse girlfriend, Pam Shiminenge when he got a hint that the said girlfriend wanted to leave him for another guy.

Sources within the neighborhood said they saw Nico go into the compound on Saturday, where his lover nurse has an apartment, with a four litre Jerry can of fuel but suspected nothing.

The source explained further that Shiminenge, who works with Lobi Hospital, also located in the High Level area of the state capital, had gone out to get some ingredients for a meal she was preparing, only to come back and meet Niko.

“She raised the alarm that Niko was trying to kill her, but because most of the other tenants were outside the compound they didn’t hear her on time.

“By the time neighbours heard and attempted to rescue her it was too late. Niko had poured petrol everywhere and on himself then struck the lighter. Neighbors couldn’t break down the door on time, by the time the firefighters came, it was too late,” the source explained.

After the door of the house was broken, it was discovered Niko had bolted the jam-lock, and also applied the other two manual locks, to prevent anyone from opening the door.

The bodies were later moved to the mortuary by officers of the Federal road Safety Corps (FRSC).
