The National Universities Commission, NUC, has today Tuesday, 10th November 2020 recognised and approved the establishment of the 50th State Government owned university in Nigeria, Confluence University of Science and Technology, Osara, Kogi State. The university, which will apparently be nicknamed with the acronym CUSTECH, will herald a concerted effort by the Kogi State Government to prioritise development of the State by advancement in its human capital through science and technology.
The Executive Secretary of NUC, Professor Adamu Abubakar Rasheed, speaking while reading out the letter of recognition in the presence of the Executive Governor of the State, said that CUSTECH will have maximum support from the Commission to help streamline the science and technology drive of the State of Kogi.
He recommended that the government take full advantage of the arrays of professional and technical advices that NUC officially provides for the establishment, funding, and operation of the university.
He said all the other supporting agencies like the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), have all been duly informed and notified of the approval of CUSTECH.
He commended the State Government for her interest in investing in education, saying such decisions remain the best way to add value to the lives of the people of the State.
The governor, Yahaya Bello, in his address, observed that the future of Nigeria will be driven by science and technology. Therefore, the decision by the state to pursue and establish an institution of learning that will help the state to harness her potentials.
Governor Bello assured that the university will be of international standards. He said utmost quality will be ensured in its staffing, learning environment, and students’ intellectual altitude.
He said that the fact that the state executive initiated the executive bill and forwarded it to the State House of Assembly, where the Bill for the establishment of the university, was deliberated and signed into law, shows the Government’s political will and seriousness.
