Youths in Bauchi State have received commendation from President Mohammadu Buhari, for not participating in the recent #ENDSARS protests that took place in different cities across the country.
President Buhari, who was represented by Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, and his counterpart Minister of State Industry,Trade and Investment, Maryam Yelwaji Katagum, gave the commendation at a town hall meeting to engage youth and communities in Bauchi on security on Monday.
Recall that the President had in the aftermath of the #ENDSARS protests, tasked his ministers to return to their various states to engage the youths and communities on the escalating security issues.
He said the federal Government was deeply concerned about insecurity and the plight of the youth that was why it quickly responded to the demands of the #ENDSARS protesters by disbanding the police outfit.
“The mandate given to us is to come to Bauchi and thank the youth for what they have refused to do,” Adamu said, enumerating several programmes and policies of the Buhari administration for the youth,” Adamu said.
“When the ENDSARS crisis started the government immediately looked into it because they had a point. All their demands were accepted and we ended sars. Already some of their other demands were being looked into,” he said.
“We acknowledge the concerns of the members of the public on the excessive use of force by members of the SARS and proceeded immediately to scrap it and we ave started the process of meeting other demands when the process turned violent”
He praised the conduct of Bauchi youth during the protests, with a call on other youths in the country to emulate the youth of Bauchi state.
“The President said we should express his gratitude for the behavior that the Bauchi youth have displayed, for the resistance against being used by people outside and the social media,” Adamu said.
“The President will continue to reciprocate the goodwill by both the Bauchi government and the people of Bauchi State. We as your representatives we are proud of the youth and the people of Bauchi,”the Minister of Education said.
He said that the administration had initiated several interventions to address youth restiveness and unemployment and urged citizens not to take laws into their hands but be law abiding and support the government to succeed.
‘While we thank Bauchi youth for being law abiding and not participating, we urge you to resist any attempt by unscrupulous elements to use you. We will continue to engage our youths and communities to better understand the grievances. Our government has invested in our youths and we will continue to invest in them,’ he said.
Also in her remarks, the Minister of State Industry,Trade and Investment, Maryam Yelwaji Katagum, urged the youth not to relent as the federal government was doing its best through various interventions to alleviate their suffering.
In his welcome address, the governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, welcomed participants to the meeting which he said was organised at the instance of the President to sensitise stakeholders in the state on security challenges.
Mohammed thanked the President for taking bold step to disband SARS and initiating reforms process in the operations of the police.
While commendeding the youth in the state for their decorum, the governor said the #ENDSARS protests were hijacked by hoodlums, where people were attacked and shops looted.
