Prominent Nigerians Blast Northern Governors, ‘Focus on developing Your Region not on Censoring Social Media’

The Northern States Governors Forum has come under heavy criticism from prominent Nigerians after they announced on Monday that the Federal Government should consider censoring social media.

The Forum noted that social media censorship was necessary if the country was to clamp down on fake news before it ruins her.

Shehu Sani.

In a statement signed and released by Simon Lalong, they said: “The superlative agitations and other change regime actions outside the ballot box soon take advantage of the peaceful protests to push for their separative agenda. The meeting endorses the indivisibility, indissolubility, and oneness of the nation.”

“The meeting took note of the devastating effect of the uncontrolled social media in spreading fake news. Therefore, calls for major control mechanism and censorship of the social media practice in Nigeria.”

Aisha Yesufu.

“Meeting raises attention on the need to keep a strict watch on the Federal Capital Territory to guide against unwarranted and destructive protests to safeguard critical assets of the nation.”

However, Nigerians like Aisha Yesufu criticised the NSGF, saying “Northern Governors should focus on the poverty, illiteracy, insecurity, kidnapping killings, street kids in the North.”

While a former Senator from Kaduna, Shehu Sani, on his part said, “Northern Governors; Their Kinsmen are being slaughtered daily by Bandits & insurgents, their people are daily being Kidnapped & impoverished by ransom, their women raped & their villages are under siege. Their people live in Fear & Funerals. Yet, Social Media is their problem.”

Reno Omokri.

On his part, Reno Omokri had this to say, “The real reason why Northern Governors are against Social Media is the same reason many of them were upset with Goodluck Jonathan. Because he built 165 almajiri schools. Social Media is opening the eyes of the almajiri, and once their eyes are open, their hold over them ends #EndSARS.”
