President Mohammadu Buhari has nominated Professor Mahmood Yakubu, as the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for another term of 5years, upon confirmation by the Senate.

This was disclosed in a press statement released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

The statement stated further that already, the President has sent Prof. Yakubu to the national assembly for confirmation in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

It read in part “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term.”

Professor Yakubu was first appointed as INEC chairman by President Buhari in November 2015, taking over from Professor Attahiru Jega.
