Anonymous Individuals Target Nigerian Government Websites, Hacks NBC Twitter Account

Anonymous individuals have threatened to take over government websites, with the  official twitter account of the National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) hacked.

This is coming amidst continued protests across different citiesNigeria, with the protesters calling on the Federal government to #ENDSARS.

Although, sources close to the government have confirmed that Twitter has helped take control of the hacked NBC account.

So far,  only posts sensitising Nigerians about the ongoing protests have been made on the twitter account.

The hackers said their mission is to “expose the government’s secrets and dirty files” with a call on Nigerians to suggest government websites that they want exposed.

“#EndSARSBrutality #EndPoliceBrutalityInNigeriaNow – We #Anonymous Group Of Hackers will continue supporting the citizens of Nigeria. Expect Us – #Hacked,” the hackers announced.

“Good morning, great Nigerians. TGIF and it’s also a good day to #ENDSARS and #EndSWAT. Which government website(s) would you want us to play with? #TwitterDown #NBChacked,” they added.

Although the NBC twitter account is yet to be verified but it had been used for official communication by the agency.

The account was created in 2013 as “the Official Twitter Account of the National Broadcasting Commission – Nigeria’s Broadcast Industry Regulator. NBC… Your Right to Quality Broadcasting.”

The account currently has over 17,200 followers.

The National Broadcasting Corporation have also put Nigerians on alert about the development.

A facebook disclaimer from the NBC on Friday, the agency explained thus:


“The general Public is put on Notice that NBC Twitter account has been hacked into.
Please disregard all tweets from our handle for now.  We are making efforts to recover it.  Thank you.”
