The Chinese company Hongao Mining Company, exposed to be involved in unapproved and environmentally unsafe “gold mining” in one Kutasa Community in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, has had its facilities in the area shut down by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Hangao was said to be polluting the water sources of the community, and also intimidating the indigent people with the help of the police, as investigation by The Cable revealed.
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESREA, has after a collaborative effort of investigations and tests, established that the company indeed is carrying out degrading and unapproved activity in the said community. Consequently, it has shut down the company’s facilities.
Switch Nigeria had reported on the 27th August 2020 that a Chinese company was in potential trouble as the Federal Government investigates its mining activities in Kutasa community of Abuja. Click on this link to read our report.
The water sources also serve six other communities in the areas near Karshi, in Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC.
Professor Aliyu Jauro, the Director-General of NESREA, said that “the concentration of lead and mercury is far above the permissible limit and they do not have an effluent treatment plant that is used to treat the waste water before discharging.”
He disclosed that some staff of Hongao who went ahead to tamper with the seal of closure and destroyed it, had two of them instantly apprehended by the police, and they will face prosecution immediately. “Some of the workers tampered with the seal and two of them are now arrested and we are going to prosecute them for destroying government property.”
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESREA, was established to ensure cleaner and healthier environment for all Nigerians. The Agency is under the Federal Ministry of Environment.
The shutdown was enforced on Tuesday, 22nd September 2020
