The first mega fixture of the new Premier League season saw reigning champions, Liverpool, take on big spending Chelsea who finished 4th last season.
The game saw a couple of new faces in both teams, with Timo Werner and Kai Harvetz all starting for the London side. While Friday signing, Thiago Alcantara also came on as a half time substitute for captain, Jordan Henderson who leaped off injured. The laters injury only added to that of two centre backs, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez.
Consequently, Reds holding midfielder, Fabinho, started at centre back, alongside Virgil van Dijk.
The opening 45 minutes of the game was fairly even, until Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen decided to haul Sadio Mane down, a foul that got him sent off.
The game was then turned on its head, with Liverpool now having numerical advantage. And it took the Merseysiders on 9 minutes to score two goals, both scored by Sadio Mane, first in the 50th minute and the second, just 4 minutes later.
Halftime substitute, Thiago, gave away a penalty in the 73rd minute when he brought down Werner in the box, presenting the Blues the perfect opportunity to get back into the game.
Step forward Jorginho! The midfielder and captain on the day took the spot kick but Liverpool’s goal keeper, Allison Becker saved it.
