The Inspector General of Police, IGP M. A. Adamu, has enjoined all security personnel, including the Nigeria Police, to avoid any action that will be detrimental to the transparent policing of the oncoming gubernatorial election in Edo State. The IGP asked all security personnel and police assigned to the State to be objective, apolitical and remain committed to the professional conduct of their job. He said this while addressing officers and men of the Force deployed for the Edo Gubernatorial Election.
The warning becomes necessary as there have been incidents where police deployed to sensitive places during elections, either feign oblivion to dubious conducts being committed around them, or become accomplices to sharp practices during elections.
The IGP instructed that their task is to ensure a transparent conduct around the locations of elections and protect everyone involved in the election exercise.
He also paid a visit to the Oba of Benin and reiterated the readiness of the Force to see to a secure conduct of elections, promising that the Police will come down hard on any individual or group who decide to cause trouble during the elections.
The police chief has been for more than a month now, advising politicians and political parties not to make statements and act in ways that will heat up the polity and incite violence.
