Premier League Begins as New Gunners’ Brazilian Recruits Dazzle

Youngster Gabriel Magalhaes and former Chelsea attacking midfielder Willian Borgess were brilliant for Arsenal Football Club at Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage as the globally popular English Premier League kicked off this afternoon in South West London, as goals from workaholic French forward Alexander Lacazette, debutant defender Gabriel Magalhaes, and prolific Gabonese superstar Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, secured a 3-0 away victory for the resurgent Arsenal Football Club managed by former Arsenal and Everton midfield player, Mikel Arteta.

The game had started at a high tempo with Fulham taking the game to Arsenal, forcing Gabriel Magalhaes to an error that almost cost the North London side but for the quick thinking of Bernd Leno. But it did not take long for Arsenal to show their intent as a goalmouth struggle ensued at Fulham’s end and the ball fell nicely for Lacazette to score and earn him the record of the only player to have scored the opening goal of the season twice, as he is also the scorer of the curtain raiser goal of the 2017/2018 season.

Willian was the creator for all the goals. First, his shot was saved by the Fulham goalkeeper on the eight minute of the game during the goalmouth tussle but the goalkeeper’s block only fell nicely for Lacazette to score past him to give Arsenal the lead.

Then, Fulham were saved by their own right-hand post as Willian’s curled free kick hit beat the goalkeeper but hit the upright.

In the second half, a beautiful corner kick by Willian was shouldered beyond the Fulham goalkeeper by Gabriel Magalhaes, who according to Mikel Arteta, had not played any competitive match for almost six months. Gabriel’s grit, reading of the game, and technical skills were a delight to watch. He is only the third Arsenal defender to score on his debut after Steve Bould during the inaugural season of the elite English Premiership in 1992; and Belgian Thomas Vermaelen in 2009.

For the third goal, Willian once again, created it. The Brazilian international located Aubameyang with an incisive crossfield pass and the pacy forward ran through the Fulham defence for a few yards before curling a beautiful shot into the net.

Aubameyang also had a glorious opportunity to extend the goal margin later in the match but could not add to his tally in the day.

Fulham, who had Alexander Mitrovic starting from the bench, had little to offer to stop the more organized and committed Arsenal players.

Arsenal’s next game is at home at the Emirates Stadium, against West Ham United, another London derby, on Saturday night.

The fans and some analysts were apprehensive about the team selection of Mikel Arteta for the game as star teenage defender, William Saliba was not listed. And teenage Bukola Saka was also missing from the starting eleven. They also feared that Mohamed El Neny may not live up to the task. But every Arsenal player was brilliant on the pitch today. ElNeny was particularly effective and tactful.
