Premier League elite club, Arsenal Football Club of London, have announced the signing of 22-year-old in-demand Brazilian defender, Gabriel dos Santos Magalhaes from French Ligue One side Lille on a long term contract. He becomes the third Brazilian player they have signed this summer after they secured the services of former Chelsea forward Willian Borgess only recently on a free transfer, and just before then tied up a one year extension to the contract of defender David Luiz, also a former Chelsea player. Arsenal appears to be assembling a Brazilian flair mix styled warchest as they already have another teenage forward in the exciting Gabriel Martinelli who enjoyed a brilliant season despite injury hiccups.
Gabriel Magalhaes, 22, started his professional career at Avai FC of Brazil, then joined Lille in January 2017. While with Lille, he had a loan stint with Croatian Dinamo Zagreb. On his return he became a regular with the Lille first team, helping them to the fourth place in the French Ligue One. He also was a regular in their Champions League campaign, starting all their matches.
Gabriel will wear the number 6 shirt at Arsenal.
Arsenal’s Technical Director Edu Gasper said: “We are delighted to have signed Gabriel. He is a player we have been studying for a while and he was in demand from many clubs, so we are proud to have agreed and completed this transfer with Lille and the player. Gabriel is a player of high quality and Mikel and his coaches are looking forward to integrating him into the club.”
Head Coach and Manager of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta said: “We welcome Gabriel to Arsenal. He has many qualities which will make us stronger as a defensive unit and as a team. He has proved with Lille that he is a defender with many outstanding attributes and we are looking forward to watching him grow as an Arsenal player.”
The youngster is set to link up with another teenage sensation, the new signing from St. Etienne of France, William Saliba, who joined the Arsenal after spending the entirety of last season on loan at his previous club, in the heart of the Arsenal defence.
Gabriel had several offers from clubs who are qualified to play in the Champions League like Napoli, but the lure of his Brazilian compatriots and the influences of both Edu, who’s a Brazilian and a former Gunner, and the rejuvenation of the club under the management of young Mikel Arteta, was enough for him to prefer a switch to North London.
