The engagement of Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to speak at this year’s NBA Conference has been abruptly withdrawn.
This is coming after more than 1000 lawyers signed a petition against his participation in the programme.
The petition was initiated by Usani Odum even as many legal practitioners saw no wisdom in involving the governor who has done little or nothing in curbing the widespread killings in the Southern Kaduna region of his state.
The governor was earlier enlisted to speak at the NBA’s 60th Annual General Conference, scheduled to take place between August 26 and August 29, 2020.
Many layers had threatened to boycott the conference should the NBA disregard their petition to still include the Governor.
A statement released by the NBA on Twitter, by the outgoing president of the NBA, Paul Usoro hinted that El-Rufai would no longer be amongst those who are to speak at the event.
The governor’s sometimes brash comments about the killings in Southern Kaduna, tainted by ethno-religious colourations, have earned him public backlash and accusations that he tacitly supports the killings, or gives a free pass to the killers.
On his part, the governor said the NBA’s decision to withdraw his participation at the programme is harsh.
