Josep Guardiola’s Manchester City have been eliminated from the season’s UEFA Champions League by the less fancied French side Olympic Lyonnais in a keenly contested quarter final match in which a crazy eight minutes towards the end of the fixture saw Moussa Dembele scoring twice to get Lyon into the semi final of the the UCL with an interesting face-off against German champions FC Bayern Munich on the 19th of August, 2020. In-form Belgian talismanic winger Kevin deBruyne had on the 69th minute cancelled out Lyon’s Maxwell Cornet’s 24th minute opener. But the late rally by Dembele left Pep Guardiola and his team panting.
The match was expected by most pundits to go the way of Manchester City, but the urgency of the French club left the City coaches flustered.
Several pundits were already talking about how the Manchester City team were going to give Bayern Munich, who last night mauled Spanish side Barcelona 8-2. But that has turned out to not be.
Raheem Sterling had missed a glorious chance to bring the game level again to 2-2 when he missed an absolute sitter, reminiscent of Yakubu Aiyegbeni for Nigeria.
This will be a night to remember for fans of the French club. But Pep Guardiola will be haunted by the tonight’s memory for a long time.
