Leeds United were among Arsenal’s bitter rivals in the early years of the English Premier League, and it is a late strike by Emile Smith-Rowe, Arsenal’s talented midfielder who came on loan, that earns Huddersfield Town Football Club all three points at home against West Bromwich Albion Football Club in the Championship match tonight 17th July 2020 and ensures that Leeds United is promoted to the Premier League after sixteen consecutive years away from the most elite cadre in English football. West Bromwich Albion started the match on 82 points, needing a win to challenge Leeds for the top position. The loss means that they cannot catch up with Leeds who have 87 points going into their last two matches. Huddersfield Town themselves were in the 20th position going into the match. But they now find themselves closer to safety, in 17th place.

Leeds are winners of the topmost English division league before the advent of the FA Premier League in 1992. But after failing to dominate the league for more than a decade after then, they were relegated to the Championship in 2004. They slipped further down the rung into League One as the club went into administration, but returned to the Championship in 2010. They have tried to return to the Premier League since then, but have fallen short of the competition each time. This time around, they have successfully earned a return through automatic qualification being top of the Championship table.
Arsenal attacking midfield player, teenage Emile Smith-Rowe, struck with only five minutes left to play, to end West Brom’s dream of automatic qualification as Huddersfield Town beat them 2-1, and even threaten their chances of qualifying for the play off.
Chris Willock had given Huddersfield Town the lead early in the first half, but the goal was cancelled out by O’Shea late in the same half.
Leeds coach, Marcelo Bielsa, said that he values the courage and efforts of the players to ensure the promotion.
The present crop of players at Leeds United have been known for combining flair with organised approach to winning games. They have been very tough to beat. Combined with the tactical tenacity of Marcelo Bielsa, their stay in the top flight could be long one.
