Abia Governor Tests Positive for Coronavirus, Goes into Isolation

The governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has tested positive for coronavirus and has already gone into isolation.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Monday by the Abia State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr John Kalu.

According to the Commissioner, the governor has since gone into isolation as required by the protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The statement read: “ Recall that on Saturday, 30th May, 2020, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu volunteered his sample for COVID-19 test and subsequently directed members of the state Executive Council and those of the inter- ministerial committee on COVID -19 to submit themselves for the same test.

“On Tuesday, 2nd June, 2020, the result of Governor Ikpeazu’s test returned negative.

“On Thursday, 4th June, 2020, the governor submitted another sample at the Nigeria Center For Disease Control (NCDC) laboratory for confirmation and the result returned positive.“

“As required by World Health Organisation, WHO and National Centre for Disease Control’s protocols, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has been isolated, quarantined and is undergoing treatment.”

The statement by the Commissioner revealed further that the governor has ordered his Deputy, Mr Ude Chukwu, to discharge every responsibility of his office as the Acting Governor while he recovers and resumes office.
