Just In: FIFA Approves Use of 5 Substitutions After the Pandemic

As part of measures to reduce the pressure and improve the welfare of players after the lockdown, the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has approved the use of 5 substitutes by football teams across the globe.

This was informed by the possible feature congestion that clubs will face after the pandemic in trying to make up for the time lost.

The long layoff is also expected to affect the fitness level of players. Match officials like the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), will also be suspended for now.

The new rule will last till 31 December, 2020. However, both FIFA and International Football Association Board (IFAB), may extend it.
While teams will be able to make five substitutions, “to avoid disruption to the game, each team will only have three opportunities to make substitutions” as well as at half time or before extra time.
