More than 30 medical doctors practicing in different public and private hospitals in Kano have been infected with coronavirus, says the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
Dr Sanusi Mohammed Bala, who is Chairman of the state chapter of NMA confirmed that one of the diseased doctors have already died.
Bala disclosed that most of the affected doctors contracted the virus while attending to unsuspecting patients who had different complications that later tests confirmed to be COVID-19 related.
Reports say that 10 of the affected doctors were from Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
Speaking on the matter, the President Association of Resident Doctors AKTH, Dr Abubakar Nagoma Usman blamed the unfortunate situation on lack of PPE, and on the bad attitude of sickened patients withholding their medical history from medical experts.
“This is more than the Lassa fever because some of the patients came without a classical symptom of the disease. Some of them even present no symptoms while sometimes, they will present with other symptoms of different disease but when you get to see them, or when you start managing them, you will realize that they are already positive for COVID-19 disease. By then, it is already late because they had already exposed themselves.
Nagoma added that some of the doctors were stable while others had been moved to the state isolation centres for proper management.
It was also learned that 9 members of the State COVID-19 response team have also gone down with the disease.
