The contract of Mikel Obi has been terminated by parent club, Trabzonspor, by mutual consent.
The former Super Eagle’s Captain and African Cup of Nations winner, moved to the Turkish side last summer as a free agent. And was given a two year deal that was set to last till 2021.
In a statement issued by the club, they said his contract has been terminated by mutual consent. However, no reason was given for termination.
The statement reads, “The professional football player agreement between our company and John Obi Mikel on 30.06.2019 start date 31.05.2021 has been mutually terminated.
“With a mutual termination agreement, the football player gave up all his forward-looking receivables.”
Mikel has been subject to racist abuse while playing for Trabzonspor and in the past week, was heard criticising the Turkish football authorities for choosing not to suspend the league, despite other leagues doing so in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.
Mikel then defused to come off the bench for their 1-1 draw with Istanbul Basaksehir.
