Nigerian Professor Develops Potential Cure for Coronavirus

Potential cure of Coronavirus has been developed in Nigeria by Bioresources Insitute of Nigeria (BION). This was disclosed in Abuja on Monday by Professor Maurice Iwu in a meeting with the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu.

Iwu, professor of pharmacognosy and former Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that the drug was discovered in 2015.

Iwu said that the discovery was made from BION’s natural products drug screening Programme, which focused on neglected tropical diseases and emergent infections. “I am here to formally brief you about our drug discovery project, which has led to the discovery of a potential treatment agent for Coronavirus infections,” Iwu said.

Iwu appealed for Federal Government support to develop the discovery into drug.

In a reaction to Iwu presentation, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu said that the research team should submit their discovery to the relevant agency of government for confirmation. He also added that the Federal Government has promised to give 36 million naira to anyone that could discover the drugs that would cure Lassa Fever and COVID-19.
