Repentant Boko Haram members were earlier on Wednesday, received in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, after giving up their arms and surrendering to the authorities in Niger Republic.
The repentant terrorists who arrived at Maiduguri airport in a military aircraft, were in the company of Nigerian soldiers, led by the coordinator of the Federal Government Safe Corridor Programme, Major General Bamidele Shafa.
The General explained that 25 ex-Boko Haram fighters comprising women and children, had laid down arms and surrendered to the Nigerien government, who contacted the Nigerian government to take them into the country.
According to him:“We have brought them home safely and handed them to the Borno State government for onward rehabilitation as part of the Operation Safe Corridor de-radicalization programme,” he explained.
General Shafa called on the other terrorists, who are yet to surrender to do so now that there is an open door for peace.
He stated further that “We are using this opportunity to encourage those that are still in the bush come out because the president of the Federal Republic has given them an open arm to drop their weapons and embrace peace.”
In her remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs in Borno State State, Hajia Zuwaira Gambo, while receiving the repentant terrorists on behalf of the state government, promised on behalf of the governor, to give the repentant terrorists the required support by providing for their basic needs.
