The US president, Donald Trump began his first ever tour of the Indian subcontinent, landing in the city of Ahmedabad today, Monday 24th, where over 100, 000 people were on ground to welcome him.
While addressing the cheering crowd, Trump said “All over the planet, people take great joy in scenes of bhangra, music, dance, romance and drama … You cheer on great cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. This is the country that produces nearly 2,000 movies a year from the hub of genius and creativity known as Bollywood”.
As part of the two-day visit, Trump will be commissioning the new cricket stadium, which is one of the largest cricket stadiums in the world. The president will also hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on religious freedom.
Since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, the killing and persecution of Christians have surged. Trump seeks to address this.
India ranks 10th on the list of countries that are very harsh to Christians. “The view of the Hindu nationalists is that to be Indian is to be Hindu, so any other faith—including Christianity—is viewed as non-Indian. Also, converts to Christianity from Hindu backgrounds or tribal religions are often extremely persecuted by their family members and communities.”, Open Doors said.
The president was accompanied by wife, Melania Trump, son-in-law Jared Kushner, and daughter Ivanka.
