Three men, said to be employees of Sokoto State Regional and Urban Planning Board, have been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling a 14 year old sachet water hawker.
ASP Muhammad Sadiq told newsmen that the culprits have been identified to be Ahmad Nawawi, who is the director of finance, Habibu Abubakar and one unnamed person, and are being interrogated.
The victims allegedly slept with the victim in their office, taking turns on her, which resulted in the teenager getting pregnant. The three men were first picked up by officers of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, where they gave separate statements, but were later handed over to the police.
Muhammad Sadiq mentioned a human rights lawyer who is also under police custody for trying to withdraw the case from NAPTIP. The police became involved after the victim’s maternal aunty Hajia Maryam Yusuf received threats to her life.
Yusuf lamented that “The father confessed to us that he was given money to abort the pregnancy and take care of the girl. I vehemently disagreed to the settlement because how could she still be under NAPTIP custody if the case has been truly over? There were pressure and threats to my life over my refusal to let the case rest. They summoned me and offered me some money, but I refused to collect it. Now they are threatening my life”.
The culprits however said they confessed to the crime under duress and that it was a setup.
