The young girl who played Gloria in the 2016 Disney biopic, Queen of Katwe, has died. Reports say she died of brain tumour.
Nikita starred as Gloria, alongside renowned African Hollywood actors, Nigerian, David Oyelowo and Kenyan, Lupita Nyong’o, and was a friend of the lead actress, Phiona who explained the rules of chess to her.
Queen of Katwe, is a Disney film about a chess prodigy by the name Phiona Mutesi from a Ugandan slum, who despite her illiteracy, took up chess at the age of 9 and went on to compete with experts at the international stage.
While on set for the shooting of the film in 2016, she was first diagnosed with a brain tumour and Queen of Katwe director Mira Nair reportedly mobilised people to help fund her treatment in India, with doctors in her native of Uganda quoted as saying they did not have the necessary equipment to treat her.
In 2017, she it was reported that the tumour was successfully removed only for it to appear again in another place last year 2019. Nikita was 15 years old.
