South-West governors have vowed that the Amotekun Corps will not be made to guard politicians, dignitaries and religious centres.
Ondo State, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, who also happens to be the Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, stated this just after the Osun State Government declared that the recruitment of personnel for the security outfit will be done at the local government level.
It can be remembered that the Federal Government initially kicked against this after it was commissioned on 9th January, 2020. But after their meeting with the President, the Vice President, Inspector General of Police, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Amotekun has now been conceptualized under community policing and given the go-ahead. The meeting was necessary because there had been fears that the security outfit would be turned into a group of bodyguards, attached to VIPs and mosques and churches.
Speaking through his aide, Governor Akeredolu reiterated that the outfit was setup to strictly combat criminal activities in the region.
