Benue State University Gets New Governing Council, as Embattled Chairman Retains Position

Professor Zacharys Gundu, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the University Governing Council

A new Governing Council for Benue State University Makurdi has been constituted, with the embattled Pro-Chancelllor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Zacharys Anger Gundu, retained to chair the affairs of the Council for the next four years.

Professor Gundu has been having a battle with the Staff of the University over the continuous failure of the University management to pay arrears of earned allowance to staff; refusal of the University Governing Council Chairman to promote non-teaching staff since 2017.

Given the above reasons, the staff of the institution on Monday, organized a protest against the chairman of the governing council, calling for his removal at the expiration of his current tenure in April this year.

Although, the current Governing Council of the Institution still has two more months to the expiration of their tenure, the Visitor of the University and Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, in a swift reaction, constituted a new Governing Council, retaining the services of Professor Gundu as its Chairman, dashing the hopes of the University staff.

A statement released on behalf of the governor by the State Commissioner for Education, Professor Dennis Ityavyar, explained the development as been in line with the law establishing the institution.

Professor Ityavyar disclosed other members of council as Chief Sabastine Hon. (SAN), Chief Mrs Sarah Mkeryi Amahson, Professor Johnson Onah, Dr. Cletus Tyokyaa, Dr. David Idoko and Mr. Williams Jam Gbaden.

According to Ityavyar, the tenure of the newly constituted Governing Council takes effect in April this year.
