Benue State Deputy Governor, Engr. Benson Abounu, has stated that for Nigeria to grow and develop, essential efforts must be made by Mechanical Engineers to promote manufacturing in the country.
Abounu stated this recently, at the investiture of the 14th National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Prof. Mohammed Baba Ndaliman, in Abuja.
According to the Deputy Governor, the only way Nigeria can survive is for it to be a producer and not just a consumer, urging the Engineers to drive the country’s manufacturing process.
Engr. Abounu who holds a HND in Mehanical Engineering as well as a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering, pointed out that the only way Mechanical Engineers can intervene by driving the manufacturing process is for them to engage in real manufacturing and not just mere fabrication.
In his words: ‘’Fabrication is the crudest method of engineering method. We must move away from that. Mechanical engineering is about manufacturing and production. No one in the world develops if it doesn’t manufacturer. Let us not deceive ourselves.
‘’For this economy to develop to become competitive, mechanical engineers have a major role to play,” he said.
He advised government to create an enabling environment for manufacturers by cutting down production cost through tax reduction.
